Another Stormy First Weekend
February 4, 2018 "The NWS forecast for Saturday is 15-25 knots, with a long period swell and rain," wrote Jack Aleer of Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club. "The SailFlow Monterey Wharf prediction for Saturday noon is 21 mph average with gusts to 33 mph and rain." Perry Cup racing for the Mercury fleet will therefore be canceled. "Perry Cup Trophies will be awarded on the basis of the first weekend. I'll be contacting trophy recipients to be sure that they get their awards." Tiburon YC has also canceled Saturday's Midwinters races and will try to run three on March 2 and three on March 3 to make up for the missed races this month and last month. Richmond YC said, "All racing is cancelled on Sunday, February 3. Forecast winds of 13 to 20 knots with gusts of 25-29 knots for the Potrero Reach Channel and Southampton shoal areas. The hoped for weather window has not appeared. We still have one more shot at some good sailing on Sunday, March 3. The trophy presentation for the series will be held immediately after racing on that day. Plan to stay around to recognize the winners and enjoy some free pupus." No: Golden Gate YC issued a very brief notice. "Race #4 on 2/2/19 will proceed," reads the PDF. Although there were many no-shows, and quite a bit of damage to gear and sails, GGYC's Seaweed Soup proceded as scheduled on February 2 in a gusty southerly with lots of ebb. See photos here. Sausalito YC's Chili Midwinters on Sunday, February 3, proceded as scheduled.
