Richmond Saturday Midwinters

Richmond Yacht Club is well known for their Sunday Small Boat Midwinters. A few years ago, the kids sailing Optimists, shepherded by coach boats, had reached critical mass and so were split off to have Saturdays to themselves. This year, multihulls and 18-ft Skiffs were split off to sail on the Southampton course on Saturdays. The series got off to a rocky start, when December's racing was blown out for all but the Optis – which sail in the most protected waters close to shore. January's races had the opposite problem – no wind. Low registration numbers threatened to move the skiffs and cats back to Sunday. But, just in time, enough signed up to keep Southampton's Saturday venue intact.
