Midwinters Miss the Rain December 2, 2012 The delivery crews were drenched but the rain let up just in time for the slightly postponed start of Saturday's Seaweed Soup midwinter race hosted on the San Francisco Cityfront by Golden Gate Yacht Club. The postponement came not due to any lack of wind, which stayed in the teens for the whole race, but due to inbound ship traffic. Because the storm-driven wind had a lot of south in it, the race committee wanted to use Harding Rock as a leeward mark, and Harding Rock's day job is separating the lanes of traffic for the big ships. But the pilot said he'd go north of the Harding, and so the race was off on a lopsided beat to Blackaller, a run to Harding, a beat back to St. Francis YC, and so on. The rain held off for the duration, and crews' handling of shifty gusts was put to the test, perhaps a good rehearsal for bigger winds some other time.
After two out of five races, a couple of boats are already contenders to win the coveted Seaweed Soup trophy. Frank Morrow's IMX-38 Hawkeye has two bullets in PHRF 3, and Gordie Nash's Arcadia, a recent winner, has two in PHRF 4,
Over at Richmond YC, racing was called off for the multihulls and Aussie 18s, but the Opti kids got in six races. The next wave of the storm hit in the evening, keeping liveaboards awake and worrying race committee officials. Richmond YC chose to call off all Sunday racing, but Sausalito YC went ahead, and those sailors were rewarded with beautiful afternoon sunshine after the morning's rain passed through.
