Left to right: Snafu, Ghost, Dire Straits, and Faster Faster begin the run down the Estuary. ©2012 norcalsailing.com |
Jack & Jill + 1 November 5, 2012 Despite the hot sunshine and easy-going breeze, no postponement was needed for Island YC's Jack & Jill + 1 regatta, Sunday's triplehanded women skippers race on the Estuary. The race committee was afraid the wind might not cooperate, so they gave the spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions a shortish course with the option of going twice around. As you begin the second lap you have to sail through the start-finish line, and if you get a horn you're done – if you don't you keep going for another lap. As it turned out, the 5-knot northwesterly was consistent enough, and the spinnaker boats got a cue to keep going and the non-spinnaker boats got horns.
With every leg the Moore 24 Snafu, skippered by Angela Robrock, crept closer to the lead boat, the Laser 28 Stink Eye, which owed everyone time. The Laser couldn't shake off the smoothly sailed Moore, and finishing a mere six seconds ahead wasn't going to do the trick.
Snafu corrected out to first place in Spinnaker, followed by the Merit 25 Faster Faster, skippered by Deb Fehr.
In Non-Spinnaker, the Tartan Ten Ghost (ex-Centurion's Ghost), skippered by Pam Krawiec with crew Glen Krawiec and Jamie Camacho, saved their time on Judith Maurier's Alerion Express 28 Scrimshaw and IYC Commodore Kristen Soetebier's Santana 22 Pueo to take the top place. Awards (buckets of wine, beer and cookies) were handed out afterwards at the club, which was still heavily decorated for Halloween. We expect that full results will be posted soon at www.iyc.org.
