The first weekend of Berkeley YC Midwinters got underway this past weekend. Race Chair Bobbi Tosse reports:
By late yesterday afternoon it sure was warm, even in Berkeley.
What can I say? It was a beautiful weekend. No crashes, no burns and no other 'fun' stuff. On Saturday, the wind gods played with our minds a bit during the 55-minute postponement. Three times we were suckered into trying to start in the wrong direction. Fortunately, we had just acquired a new batch of shotgun shells. The light (5-7 knots) wind finally settled in from where it belongs (WSW) and we were good to go. Sixty boats in eight divisions enjoyed the eight-mile windward/leeward course.
By Sunday, the wind had lightened even more, again requiring a postponement. And again, the wind gods played with us. We ended up postponing in the middle of the sequence because all semblance of moving air stopped and there were two divisions of boats bobbing on and around the start line. Eventually, enough of a whiff filled in and the 24 boats in six divisions were away on an eight-mile course with the weather mark of F. The situation began to deteriorate, and all the boats seemed to be gathering at the leeward mark. We opted to shorten the course, and naturally the weather man’s promise of the 10 knot northerly filled in. And thus the entire fleet was finished with dispatch.
The results are posted at www.berkeleyyc.org.

Divisions on Saturday included six for PHRF, Express 27s, and Cal 20s. Five of the little boats signed up, four raced, and three finished, topped by Can O'Whoopass. On Sunday, some of the Express 27s returned for a one design fleet, joining four PHRF divisions and one lonely multihull (the Corsair 31 Emma).
