Meet Roshambo August 29, 2010 Roshambo is a 1999 Corsair 31R, the race version of the Corsair 31. The main difference is a limited amount of interior and a carbon mast. I bought the boat in Florida in 2006 and had it shipped out to California. I owned a Moore 24 with my dad for 13 years prior to moving to a multihull. Both boats have been dry-sailed out of Alameda. Tight reaching is the fastest point of sail. The apparent wind moves forward about 30 degrees, and you can sail faster than true wind speed. I think during the last interclub race, on August 14, crew Ruben Gabriel reported seeing boat speeds of 12-13 knots with a true wind speed of about 10 knots on a tight reach with the spinnaker up.
The large turn-out of 12 multihulls was a big motivating factor in getting Roshambo to the start line for that race. It was really great to be part of a full start line of multihulls. I had a lot of luck on my side as well as my great crew. Ruben and I ended up sailing doublehanded. Being shorthanded made the mark roundings a little busy, but Ruben nailed all the maneuvers and double timed on getting everything done. Roshambo's win in that race is really credited to his crew work. We sailed conservatively, dropping the spinnaker early, and we gave the monohull boats room at the marks. We had boat speed, so we did not need the extra work of getting into a quick tacking situation. The light conditions really helped us out and made our jobs a lot easier.
We saw Chaos on the last run, and they looked fast with the spinnaker up. I think if we had to do another lap they would have closed the gap. Sunbow3 on the first beat was fast. Give them a couple more races and they will be hard to beat.
I had a head cam on for the race and made a video of some the action. The lens started to fog up towards the end, so the images start to get cloudy. The goal for racing Roshambo is boat speed. In order to sail to the 0 rating we have to keep the boat speed up on all points of sail. Falling off five degrees going upwind changes your boat speed from 7 knots to 12 knots, so footing a little more sometimes gets you to the windward mark faster. Some fast facts about Roshambo:
As they say, "Fast is fun," and it is so easy to go fast on Roshambo that we always have fun when we hit the water. Some more videos from the past couple of seasons: YRA race on 8/7/10 aboard the Antrim 27 Head Rush. The video below was taken from the stern-mounted camera and was put together by one of the other crew members (Arne). The footage is up to the first downwind run and wipe-out. After the recovery we contuined racing. The lens fogged up so the footage is not that clear. - Darren Doud Click here for a photo gallery of the Interclub #5 race. Go here for results.
