Jeff Zarwell’s RegattaPRO runs a Winter One Design series for J/120, J/105, J/24, Melges 24 and Moore 24 fleets using inflatable marks west of the Berkeley Circle. He files this report on Saturday’s race:

Well, it started off with a forecast of 4-9 knots ENE in the morning, clocking to ESE in the afternoon. So when I arrived at the Circle at 1030 and saw the wind very light out of the east I thought maybe the weather service was going to be right today, something that had not happened all last year.

Then the breeze shut down and clocked to the south. Awesome, they are right, and the shift came before I set the course. Scramble the boats and let’s get the course set up!

From there, the wind died only to come back at 9-10 knots out of the north. We set up the course and sent them off.

That's when the real fun began. The wind went west to 280, then east to 020, then to 080, then to 275, back to 020, over to 300, you get the idea.

Foolish me, I chased it. It held in each spot long enough (five minutes or more) that I felt I needed to make changes, only to be out-smarted by the breeze. Will I ever learn?

At one point I had fleets going to a windward mark at 300 and others sailing to a windward mark at 020. Go figure.

Aside from that it was a great day.

Jeff was pleased to get in three races this weekend. He had to cancel racing in December due to the ominous forecast, and his goal was to make up the two missed races by adding one each to the January and February race days. The J/105 leaders are close between first and second (Alchemy and Racer X), and third and fourth places (Donkey Jack and Wianno). Topper II is on top of the 19-boat Moore 24 fleet by a whopping 11 points. Dayenu is leading the J/120 fleet handily. Some photos from the J/120 action:
