ICSA National Championships
Yale University won the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Women’s National Championships this year with Jane Macky of Auckland on the helm and SoCal gal Marla Menninger crewing. The races were co-hosted by St. Francis YC on the Cityfront, a challenge for the out-of-towners. The races were held May 26-27 in low-fifty-degree air temperatures, mid-fifty-degree water temps, and up to 22 knots of wind.
“It was down to the last race,” said Head Coach Zach Leonard. “Conditions were very windy and challenging, and we didn’t have a heavy air crew for A-Division, so Jane and Marla sailed every race. They worked so hard. To come through right at the end when they were exhausted and to see them handle the pressure and win is just great.”
Host team Stanford came in 12th, and were the only team from California.
Later the same week over at Treasure Island Sailing Center, defending champions Boston College won the ICSA/APS Team National Championships for 14 top colleges. Cal Maritime Academy was the hosting college but did not compete. Stanford was the only Bay Area team, UC Irvine the only other California team, although a couple of San Diegans were along the Boston College winners.
On May 28, St. Francis YC held an Afterguard regatta for alumni in Club 420s on the Cityfront. Complete results of all three events are available at www.collegesailing.org. The ICSA championships wrap up with the Gill Coed Dinghy races June 1-3, co-hosted by Stanford and St. Francis YC on the Cityfront.
