Don Wan Regatta
Don Wan Regatta
Gary Proctor, Race Chair at Tiburon YC, reports on Saturday’s Don Wan Regatta, held on the North Bay:
This year’s Don Wan Regatta was the suave affair you would expect from a name like that.
Twenty-four boats signed up, twenty-one hit the start line (at least once) with three one designs. The folks from the Open 5.7 group, the Ultimate 20s and the never least Folkboat fleet signed on for one design starts. It was very unfortunate three of the Folkboats coming over from the City ran out of breeze within sight of the start line and were unable to race. We felt the pain!
Don Wan Himself (Don Kunstler) and his Cool Crew handled race committee and should be commended for pulling off a great regatta. With late entries and juggling divisions and start times, it was a mad scramble to get everyone off the start line at the appropriate times. And the Crew did it well.
The racing had typical breezes off Paradise Cay: none, then three from the east, then six from the west, then south, then 15 knots out of the west to finish off the day. The one design fleets got to enjoy two starts while the rest of the divisions were stuck with just one. Which was plenty.
