Tiburon Blonde Heats Up Florida
Tiburon sailor Genny Tulloch won the Rolex Women’s Match in St. Petersburg, FL, after three days of racing. “The regatta was really good for us,” said Genny as she waited to board a flight to Charleston Race Week. “It was the first time my team has sailed together.” The crew are from Rhode Island. “There was a lot of stuff we needed to work on; coming out of it in the lead on the last day was awesome.”
Sunday’s racing was canceled due to lack of wind; by then Genny and crew had won all 18 of her matches. “The wind was puffy, so we all had to keep our heads out of the boat. At times we had to stop match racing and start fleet racing. We weren’t necessarily using match racing tactics the way you would in non-shifty conditions.” Genny is from Houston, Texas, by way of Harvard, and has a dinghy sailing background, most recently in the 29erXX.
St. Petersburg Yacht Club hosted the event, sailed in four-person Sonar keelboats, on Tampa Bay. See www.wimra.org for more, including a big photo gallery.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Florida peninsula, former Santa Cruzer Roger Sturgeon and crew on his STP 65 Rosebud/Team DYT set a new record in the Ft. Lauderdale to Charleston, South Carolina, Race. The record they broke had stood since 1974. For all the details, see www.fortlauderdalecharlestonrace.org.
By the way, in case you think our headline is sexist, Tiburon Blonde is actually an ale produced by Marin Brewing Company, which has nothing to do with this story.
