Sea Lion vs Ray
Sea Lion vs Ray
Bay Area sailor Stephen Buckingham encountered this real-life nature drama while kayaking off of Point Belvedere on Wednesday. “We came upon a huge sea lion thrashing and eventually killing a ray with about a three-foot wingspan. The ray was alive when we first got there. After tossing it around the sea lion would dive for a bit, presumably chasing it to the bottom, then surface again with the bloody ray. The old guy (probably the biggest sea lion I've seen) was huffing and puffing at the surface clearly having a good workout with this big fish. By the time I got the camera out the ray was being ripped to pieces and the gulls were moving in.
“We circled for a while and the sea lion seemed to have no interest in us until at one point he rose straight up and gave us the hairy eyeball. And we paddled on.”
