Tiburon Yacht Club Race Report
Tiburon YC Race Chair Gary Proctor filed this report:
What a month! A sizable storm with a ton of rain, strong winds and ripping currents must have been just too much for poor Panda. [For those who don’t know her, Panda is one of two small buoys that more or less permanently mark the TYC start-finish line.] But, we have her back sans ground tackle.
The Tornberg Regatta race-off of the best on September was a closely fought battle in both divisions. Division One (Spinnaker) was won by Moore 24 Mooretician, with Peter soon-to-be Commodore Schoen and Roe Patterson, setting the pace to earn a first overall followed by J/105 Joyride, skippered by Bill Hoelher, and third to Moore 24 Frenzy with Lon and Susie Woodrum, who seem to have broken their second place curse….oops! Wrong way guys. Division Two (Non-Spinnaker): Santana 28 Don Wan, with Don Kunstler driving, took a very closely contested first with six point for the series. Also with six points was Ian Matthew aboard the C&C 29 Siento el Viento, which didn’t have a first for the series thus the second place. Lady Ann Watson on her Cal 2-27 Wind Dance placed third
October 17 was a spectacular day for racing. Warm breezes, sun and the Double Handed Race. Alice Martin popped by for the race aboard her former Moore 24 Sunshine in Division One and soundly trounced the competition. Did I mention she brought son Stan, current Sunshine proprietor, to help out as well? Moore to come about Stan (no, it’s not a typo). Second place was earned by Onne Broek sailing the beautiful Beneteau 10R Latitude 52 - and, he brought some attitude to this race! Third was Aidan Collins aboard the J/105 Miss Demeanor. Division Two was lead by Aaron Wangenheim in the J/22 with no name also trouncing the competition. Second by a lot of minutes was the red Hawkfarm Red Hawk sailed by the Gerry Gunn/John Sullivan duo and even further back in third was C&C 30 Meritime with Proctor and excellent crew Wayne VanLoon.
October 18 delivered light air for the Single Hander and five boats hit the starting line…two Moores, a J/105, a C&C 30 and a Folkboat… all racing against each other… eh? Remember Stan Martin from above? He definitely gets the show-off award setting a kite on the way to the RWC buoy while the rest of us thought we were on a close reach, then jibes around RWC to make tracks back to the Birdcage (that’s about a 140° turn) where he jibes again to go to C15, then and only then does he drop the kite which was a bit of surprise to some of us thinking he would just fly the thing all the way around the course. Lon Woodrum, driving sistership Frenzy, with a larger headsail and recently re-tuned mast, managed to gain some ground on Stan on the beat to the finish. But Stan out-distanced all to win first place. Nice sail handling!
Frenzy did manage a second with J/105 Natural Blonde sailed by Dennis Deisinger third. Note: Stan announced to the world after dropping the kite at C15 and clearing the bridge on the way home that he was popping a beer! Dennis reported popping a couple prior to this point but not having a single CD on board, thus listening to himself sing. Any correlation here to the results?
Coming up is the Red Rock Regatta just in time to finish October off on the 31st. Get your entries in now! Also, don’t forget the hard core Wild Turkey race November 27. That’s a day before the Earth stands still for a moment - slight as it may be!
