We can only imagine how relieved Dean Crowell must have been in the hour before dawn this morning, when his wife Barbara Euser reached him by cell phone. Barbara is sailing the Bristol 34 Islander in the Singlehanded TransPac, and had not been heard from since July 21. Barbara was calling from 20 miles offshore, making about 2 knots. She’s expected to finish around 1300 HST, an hour past the 1200 deadline.
Sylvia Seaberg of the Race Committee expressed her relief with the expression, “All the little chicks are accounted for.”
Ruben Gabriel’s dismasted Pearson Electra Sparky, sailing under jury rig, had 372 miles to go at Saturday morning’s check-in. He had been going along pretty well, but has been slowed down by lack of wind. He’s shooting video of his mast-boom-sail arrangement, so we’ll be sharing that with you shortly after he arrives here in Hanalei Bay.
All but Islander and Sparky have completed the 2008 Singlehanded TransPacific Race from San Francisco to Kauai. Click here for video of Thursday and Friday’s arrivals.
