We’re almost surprised that we were able to race on Saturday, in Golden Gate Yacht Club’s Seaweed Soup Race #3. We tried to count the boats at the starting line, but we couldn’t see them all. Turning our faces into the wind to see where we were going on the first leg (to Blackaller buoy) was almost as difficult, as we were stung with windswept hail so tiny we could feel it more than see it. A big swell coming in from the bigger seas offshore gave us those funny moments of vertigo you get outside the Gate until you get used to it. Yet, despite the discomfort, we had some really good racing, and weren’t a bit sorry we didn’t call in sick.

Lots of the boats entered were no-shows, and we can’t blame them. Besides crews canceling, some skippers had power outages and property damage to cope with. About half the boats entered raced, and just a handful DNF’d, but the Folkboats and Knarrs only fielded one competitor each.
