Rolex Big Boat Series Wrap-Up
Rolex Big Boat Series Wrap-Up
A movie has been added to our coverage of Rolex Big Boat Series.
Crews mooning each other, attempted boardings by swimmers, and high-tech water-balloon fights - just some of the highlights of the last day of Rolex Big Boat Series. Oh, and there was a race too. After a more than two hour postponement, while the fog lifted, the sun got hot, and the wind held off, a decent westerly finally filled in and the last race of this series, the traditional Bay Tour, got underway.

Breeze was clocked at up to 23 knots, but the water stayed mostly flat as the flood lingered. A good time was had by most. Hazardous Waste, one of 34 J/105s, was having a really good race until the very end, just before the finish, when they got a little too close the rocks under the clubhouse, and they touched bottom and stuck there. Ironically they were in the process of jibing away while calling for sea room. Fortunately, it was the keel and not the bow that struck the rocks.

No huge surprises in the results, with some winners repeating last year’s glory, including Andy Costello’s 1D35 Double Trouble, Chris Perkins’ J/105 Good Timin’ (which has now won five Big Boat Series) and Steve Madeira’s J/120 Mr. Magoo. The Magoo crew pulled it off in the last race, as Chance had been leading up until then. Philippe Kahn’s Pegasus got five bullets to dominate the new Melges 32 fleet. Bustin’ Loose, Jeff Pulford’s Sydney 38 won in that fleet, also pulling off five bullets. Bartz Schneider’s Express 37 Expeditious, in close competition with Kame Richards’ Golden Moon, earned the Richard Rheem Perpetual Trophy.
John Kilroy’s TP 52 Samba Pa Ti edged out Roger Sturgeon’s speedy new STP 65 by one point on corrected time to win the San Francisco Perpetual Trophy in IRC-A. In IRC-B, Kokopelli2, Lani Spund’s busy SC 52, won the City of San Francisco Trophy. Dave Kirby of Marina del Rey won the Keefe-Kilborn Trophy in IRC-C with his brand spankin’ new J/122, TKO. In IRC-D, last year’s winner Tupelo Honey led for most of the series, but JY Lendormy’s 45-ft Jeanneau Acabar topped the Elan 40 in number of firsts (they tied at 12 points) and was awarded the Keefe-Kilborn Memorial Trophy.

This year’s event saw more boats (112) than last year (90) and less wind. Conditions were often mild, sometimes moderate, never nukin’, as you can see by the photos. We’ll continue adding to our photo gallery, so if you don’t see your boat there now, check back in a day or two. For complete results, see www.stfyc.com.
