One Long One for Jack Frost
One Long One for Jack Frost
Unpredicatable weather (is there any other kind?) threw a wrench in the plans of the Encinal Yacht Club race committee on Saturday, when they gave their Jack Frost racers a triple sausage around inflatable marks with a downwind finish for the first of two races.
They had no shortage of wind at the start, about a mile north of Treasure Island. But the southerly wind softened as the currents went wacky in their switchover from ebb to flood. Once again (like in last Saturday’s Corinthians), the competitors found themselves battling the flow of water to get to their marks. The second time around the leeward mark was enough, and the RC wisely shortened the course by a half-sausage, moving the finish to the windward mark.
With hopes of running a second race, the RC sent Division A (the faster PHRF boats) on a single sausage course and delayed going into sequence for the following classes. A couple of boats, including a Farr 40, were over early and had to claw their way back to the line to restart. The RC volunteers watched Division A round the windward mark down by TI and attempt to come back north, but it looked like a futile endeavor. Just before 1500, the RC abandoned the second race and sent us all home. Their competitive spirit still racing, some of the Div. A sailors started calling each other to race back to Encinal. No word on who won.
The results of the official race are available at www.encinal.org.
