Folkboats and 29ers
Folkboats and 29ers
A couple of long regattas wrapped up this weekend. The SF Cup Folkboat International Regatta on finished six days of racing on Saturday. The 29er Nationals raced three days, Friday-Sunday.
In the Folkboats, Americans (both San Franciscans actually) David Wilson and Eric Kaiser took the top two spots after seven races, and Per Jorgensen of Kolding, Denmark, got third. This is a repeat for David, who won the odd-year regatta two years ago. His crew this year included Sean Svendsen, Mike Peterson, Risley Sams, and Patrick Morgan.
Eight of the boats sailed by the out-of-town crews were local loaners. Plenty of Folkboats to go around on SF Bay!

The 29er skiffs, sailed by two (usually young) people, had their Nationals at St. Francis YC. Local dudes Max Fraser and David Liebenberg topped the 25-boat fleet, followed by Sterling and Hans Henken, and JP Barnes and Chris Rast. The first female-crewed boat came in fifth, with Julia Paxton and Nina Malingri aboard. The 29ers are lightweight, and their crews usually are too, so all-girl or coed duos are not uncommon. The coed boats are generally skippered by the girl, as the heavier of the two sailors hikes out on a trapeze. For complete results, see www.stfyc.com.
Many thanks to Erik Simonson for sending the awesome photos of both events.
“By the way, I’m proud to announce the addition a of a fifth gallery,” writes Erik, “all edited and keyworded. Sail numbers or owner names in the search box will provide results from the Rolex Big Boat Series and 505 Worlds.
“For instance, ‘Crash sequences’ and ‘carnage’ will result in some visual fun. Entering countries ‘Germany’, ‘Australia’, ‘Denmark’, ‘Great Britain’ or ‘Canada’ will isolate 505 crews from those countries individually.
“Typing in ‘Rabbitt start’ and ‘group’ will present mass roundings and legs.” See www.printroom.com/GHome_main.asp?domain_name=h2oshots
