Sausalito Summer Sunset Series
Of wind, fog and... more fog. Last Tuesday evening’s Sausalito Yacht Club beer can race was a very picturesque affair with the boats dodging in and out of sunlight while dodging each other.
The marks were set to compensate for the strong ebb current (as well as possible), and longer courses were chosen to maximize the fun. Three first three divisions were sent on a long run from the Yellow Bluff temporary windward mark all the way down to YRA #8 past Angel Island. That was a long run against the ebb for the non-spinnaker boats, but they flew back to the finish line on the the same current.
Making up for the strong current was a strong wind, up to 30 knots at the downwind mark, producing some exciting jibes. Everyone got back to the club by dark and no pictures of wrapped spinnakers around Harding Rock buoy were taken.
SYC divides the beer can series into two seasons, spring and summer, taking most of July off in between, and holds races every other Tuesday. Results and more can be found at www.syconline.org. Many thanks to Jeff Zarwell and the race committee volunteers for taking our photographer along.
