Summer Sailstice Racing
Summer Sailstice Racing
The Yacht Racing Association of San Francisco observed the summer solstice (aka Sailstice) Saturday with one Central Bay race for HDA fleets and two for ODCA (one design) classes. Summer Sailstice was race #3 for the two divisions. South Beach Yacht Club ran the races, after a delay getting to the starting area when their trawler’s engine overheated. They threw in just a five-minute postponement, and bang, they were in sequence, with a pod of trimarans starting first.
The first monohull division had such an aggressive start that they suffered a general recall. We’d like to report that the second start was clean, but some sideswiping hull contact made it otherwise. The offending crew promptly did their penalty turns, and no damage was reported.
Winds were not as gnarly as forecasted, but gave the racers a good ride.
Results should be posted soon at www.yra.org.

Savage Beauty, a Flying Tiger 10, sailed in HDA. The morning started out clear from horizon to horizon, then clouds filled the sky, only to break apart again, allowing the solstice sun to shine. © 2009 norcalsailing.com
