"I love San Francisco. It's a great venue to race, And this regatta has been fun." That coming from Dave Ullman, third place finisher in this year’s Melges 24 Nationals. It's hard to remember closer racing between the podium finishers, All three, Brian Porter's Full Throttle, Vince Brun's Bailout and Dave Ullman on team Pegasus all finished with 20 points. “It would be nice to have more boats out here. But still, Brian Porter’s kicking our butt," commented Ullman.
St. Francis Yacht Club hosted the eight-race regatta on the Cityfront Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The racing was tricky because of changing wind levels and changing tides. The flood didn't start flowing until the middle of the day, making the decision about when to scurry to the Cityfront for tide relief harder. Those who picked the right time did well, while those who waited too long were left behind.
David Joyner's team on Flying Circus, mostly locals from San Francisco Yacht Club, were having a good time on Saturday despite the light and challenging conditions. "We actually would like it to be windier,” said Joyner. “This light and shifty stuff makes it confusing." Spoken by a true San Francisco Bay racer. (He would get his wish on Sunday, when the winds perked up.) "We went with five onboard for the first time, and I like it better. We have one very light person helping me with the main and it's been working great." Flying Circus finished mid-pack throughout the series with the goal to do better. "We just want to stay close to the pros. We are all amateurs. Anytime you can be up with the pros it feels like a victory." And they beat the other SFYC boat, Practice Girl. Which is good.
