Like dessert after dinner, a spot in the Winners Race is the reward for being good. The first, second and third place division winners in Berkeley YC’s Midwinter Series get a bonus race thrown in - the Winners Race, held this past Sunday on the Berkeley Circle.
“The rain was the newsmaker of the day,” reported Race Chair Bobbi Tosse. “The few hardy souls that showed up did have fun and some pretty close racing. The wind stayed up enough (SE 15-20 knots) to make a person feel there was a chance of actually dodging all the rain drops.
“The actual ‘Champion of Champions’ was Richard vonEhrenkrook in his Cal 20 Can o' Whoopass. This is the first time since the inception of this event in 1986 that a Cal 20 has taken the honors.”

Competing against boats as much as twice its size, the Cal 20 won first place in the Blue division (first place winners); George Ellison’s Schumacher 30 Shameless won the Red division (second place winners), and Drew Harper’s Ultimate 20 Stella won the White division (third place winners).
