Tiburon YC Race Chair Gary Proctor reports on February 14’s sweet midwinter race in the North Bay:
What a day! With the recent storms coming through, the wind was there, then not, mostly there though. The first beat was to mark ‘TYC’ at the South Paradise Cay entrance, which found the breeze swirling as much as ninety degrees. At one point Meritime was a few hundred feet from Red Hawk, both close-hauled on starboard tack, but sailing ninety degree different courses. The breeze filled in nicely for the run to R16 with a few low pressure squalls and a bit of rain. The 12-mile, twice around course was eventually shortened to once around. Those with the big jibs up paid dearly on the beat back into the flood to finish from R16 when the breezes did kick in. We saw lots o’ rails under (ours included) as the wind built to the twenties with higher gusts.
Final results:
Division One J/105s:
1st (and only to show up); Aidan Collins, Miss Demeanor
Division Two:
1st; Lon and Susie Woodrum, Frenzy, Moore 24
2nd; Ann Watson, Wind Dance, Cal 2-27
3rd; Gary Proctor, Meritime, C&C 30
Thanks to Race Committee Peter Schoen and Roe Patterson for a great day of racing!
- Gary Proctor, TYC Race Chair
Gary adds that Past Commodore Ian Matthew took second in the Corinthian Midwinters with his C&C 29 Siento el Viento. “He coulda done better if he’d sailed the right course on Sunday.” Despite the error, he took a nice big chunk of glass home from the awards ceremony.
