“The results are in,” reports Steve Wonner, “and Uno is the new Wyliecat 30 World Champion. The competition was great, the weather outstanding and the party was a great opportunity to get together as a group. Unfortunately, gear failure prevented Dazzler from racing on Sunday.”
Tom Patterson, skipper of Dazzler, explains the event: “The 2009 Wyliecat World Championship was organized by Steve Wonner (Uno). The last ‘Worlds’ was in 2007. There was no yacht club support; the ‘race committee’ was Dave Wahle, builder of Wyliecats, and the race committee boat was a Boston Whaler supplied by Wyliecat owner Andy Hall (Life is Good). Andy also owns the Wylie Gemini Twin Encore.”
“Saturday’s races were on relatively short windward-leeward courses south of the Alameda NAS. Temporary inflatable marks were set.
“The Saturday night party was graciously hosted by Steve and Helen Wonner at their Alameda home. Everyone contributed appetizers, salads and desserts to the spread provided by the Wonners. Tom Wylie and his daughter Lindsay were among those in attendance.
“Sunday’s race was a ‘Bay Tour’ starting from the same area as on Saturday and ending west of Treasure Island, with finishers taking their own times.”
Uno won by two points over second place boat, Russell Long’s Margay. Steve Seal and John Skinner’s Silkye came in third.
The Wyliecat fleet, like many others, are now discussing their choice of midwinter series.
