NorCal New Years Day
NorCal New Years Day
New Year’s Day tradition on San Francisco Bay has the Master Mariners Benevolent Association sailing their classic craft on a very casual race, with a destination up Richmond’s Santa Fe Channel for a chili potluck at Pt. San Pablo Yacht Club. Ariane Paul of MMBA reports picks up the story from here.
There were two starts:
Marbara vs. Sequestor
Bolero vs. Pegasus
Marbara came in to Pt. San Pablo YC first, Bolero came in next, then Pegasus, which took out a big crew on a volunteer sail. Sequestor finished the ‘race’ and came in. The Bear Boat Huck Finn and Briar Rose had nice sails and just came in.
The tacky trophies were presented with all the proper pomp and circumstance.
Several of us chose to bestow them upon Steve Hutchinson who has worked on many of our boats and has now gone over the deep end and bought himself a great boat, the Winslow gaff ketch Dutch.
Patty Henderson organized the potluck for the crowd, which got pretty big in the early evening.
The boats that participated were:
AIDA - Skip Henderson and Ariane Paul - providing one end of the starting line (the platform at Southampton Shoal provided the other)
Bolero - Tim Murison
Pegasus - Captain Richard Gillette
Marbara - Suzy Olson
Sequestor - Hans List
Huck Finn - Margie Siegal
Briar Rose - John Ough
