Vicki Sodaro of Sausalito’s Hood Sails and suburbia’s Tiburon has captured the Adams Cup for the third time. With crew Stephanie Wondolleck, Emily French and Katie Maxim, Sodaro bested second-place Wendy Roach’s Fort Worth team by 25 points. Eleven teams sailed 11 races in J/22s on Lake Hefner, hosted by Oklahoma City Boat Club, Sept. 18-21.
Flat water, light air, warm temps. Although winds didn’t whip up to more SF-like 15-18 knots until the last race, the SF team had already clinched it. © 2008 Bruce McDermott/www.sdsailing.com

Overlapping the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championships (Adams Cup), the U.S. Men’s Sailing Championships (Mallory Cup) was held in J/24s on San Francisco Bay, hosted by San Francisco YC (which Sodaro and crew were representing in OK) Sept. 16-20. In this regatta, the Texans prevailed. Another very experienced, repeating winner, Scott Young led an Austin crew to a narrower victory over 10 other teams after 11 races. Our local team, representing Berkeley YC and led by Michael Whitfield, came in eighth.
