The results are in for the South Bay Yacht Racing Association’s race on July 12 off of (former) Naval Air Station Alameda. Congratulations to the top three finishers in the eight-boat Spinnaker Division: Tim McDonald on his Tartan 10 Lazy Lightning, Luther Izmirian on Paradigm (J/32) and Mist - Keith Barker and Robert Hu's Beneteau First 38.
Wired missed the race ("crew deficit") but would have loved to have seen
this Division A finish with just nine (true) seconds separating Lazy
Lightning and Mist! Of course Tim still corrected out with his PHRF 126 versus Keith and Robert's PHRF 108; moreover, only 4.5 minutes separated the top four finishers in the spinny class.
At the finish Luther was sandwiched between his two competitors with a
spinny-wrap handicap plus his J's inability to sail square with his kite
as the others were. Kevin Hartig on his San Juan 24 Sandpiper got good exposure for his summer tan by spending almost three hours on the race course, but still finished ahead of no-shows Wired and Black Sheep.
Three boats sailed in Division B and were led across the start/finish line by Osprey (Rob & Hilary Hutchinson, C&C 35), Zingara (Steve & Jocelyn Swanson, Islander 36) and Vita e Bella (Jack Verducci, Catalina 42 MkII).
Luther indicated that this was a great day for light-air boats, and
everyone had a good time.
Thanks to Dan Watson and his race committee from Ballena Bay Yacht Club of Alameda for doing such an unusual (lengthening the course?) but excellent job during the afternoon. Race 5 of the summer races will be
hosted by San Leandro YC in the East Bay on Saturday, August 2. For more on SBYRA racing, see http://sbyra.home.comcast.net/~sbyra/
