Friendship Race
“What a great day it was!” enthused Tiburon Yacht Club Commodore Ian Matthew in describing the Corinthian-Tiburon Friendship Race. “The wind howled and the racing was tough. This year was the first time TYC hosted this event, as we were always waiting for the marina to be able to allow the boats to dock!” New docks and adequate dredging of Paradise Cay Yacht Harbor have made it possible for TYC to host visitors.
“We all enjoyed the racing, masterfully organized by Harry Blake of TYC and Dan Carrico of CYC. Harry put care into setting a good start line and a great challenging course in 20+ knot winds. I saw one main get blown out and some chickening out with the spinnakers - but it is a friendly event!” Harry Blake’s Sabreline motoryacht Limelight served as race committee boat.
“We were honored to host and humbled to be beaten,” continued Ian. “We'll send our complete #1 team to CYC next year to regain the trophy.
Congratulations to CYC - we look forward to 2009.”
Harry Blake explains the history of the event, “Eight years ago the Corinthian YC and the Tiburon YC had an idea that racing against each other in a friendly fashion for both individual trophies and an overall club trophy would be fun. Tiburon has held a comfortable lead in the series but the tenacious Corinthians have never given up.
“For this year, the ninth running of this series, the Moseley family graciously allowed our competitors to use the brand-spanking new Paradise Cay Harbor for dockage, so we ran the race from Tiburon YC. And the great wind off Paradise Cay didn’t disappoint. Eight Corinthian and 14 TYC boats raced in south San Pablo Bay in 12-18 knot winds. Afterwards the Cheeseburgers in Paradise plus maybe some Tiburon Blonde beer helped augment the experience of the racing memories.”
