South Beach Friday Night
"We shouldn't have reefed; we were going 4.5 knots upwind,” said Flying Tiger skipper John Lymberg. In 14 knots of wind some of the more tender boats reefed at the start. With only six people onboard, it was on the edge for the Flying Tiger Savage Beauty. Tactician Drew Harper (of Spinnaker Sailing) agreed that the reef probably didn't help. They got DFL in Division 1.
South Beach Yacht Club’s race committee was pleased with the turnout (48 boats) for Friday night’s race and pleased with their new start line trawler.
A newcomer to this series, Black Sheep, a Beneteau 25 (which some racers mistook for a Melges 24), was singlehanded by Ron Brown and came in DFL in Division 2.
Pleasant and sunny weather prevailed. Usually by the end of these races the fog is pouring over the hills, but this was a fog-free evening.
For more than 20 years, South Beach YC was in a 'temporary' building at Pier 40. In those days, bodies jammed the clubhouse after Friday night races, with hardly room to move. The beautiful new clubhouse - nicely designed, well laid out, and reasonably spacious - still seems every bit as crowded, with wall to wall sailors enjoying cheap drinks, barbecue and cake after the race.
All the results, plus the NOR and online registration can be found at www.southbeachyc.org. SBYC has races two to three Fridays per month through August - a baker’s dozen in total divided into a spring half and a summer half.
