Sausalito Midwinters
What a difference a day makes. It could have been sunnier, but in comparison to GGYC’s midwinter race on Saturday, Sausalito YC's race on Sunday proved to be a mellow, flat water, light wind affair. RegattaPRO’s Jeff Zarwell set up an almost perfect windward/leeward course of 4.3 miles for the racers in the Knox area, and everyone got in to the club in plenty of time for afternoon drinks and burgers. The only mishap for the day was an impromptu MOB drill aboard the Olson 34 Razzberries.
"We thought it was going to get windy right at the start,” said Bruce Nesbit, owner of Razzberries, “so we put our #2 up, and then of course the wind died.” Razzberries has a roller-furling jib, which makes it hard to change jibs while racing. “We lost a few places when picking up Bruce from the water.” (Foredeck crew Bruce Manchester had slipped overboard at the spreaders after a spinnaker douse.) “Actually we lost most of time after we had him onboard again. We had to go back to pick up his PFD which was floating away very rapidly." Bruce couldn’t slip back aboard between the lifelines with his inflated PFD, so he jettisoned it.
This winter the course will be crowded with a swarm of Santana 22s racing one design with 13 boats signed up (take that, J/105 fleet). Eleven showed up for the first race, some we’d never even heard of before, some recently repaired and/or with new owners.
A big thank you to the race committee and to Jeff Zarwell in particular for taking our photographer on his crash boat. See all the results at www.syconline.org/Race/resultspage.html. The next race in the series will be run on December 7.
