Moseley Regatta

July 20, 2015

On Saturday, July 18, Tiburon Yacht Club hosted the annual Moseley Regatta for Etchells and Knarrs. TYC has hosted this regatta for many years to commemorate Jeff Moseley’s grandfather, who was an Etchells racer.
Fourteen club volunteers gathered together at 0900 Saturday morning to load up equipment onto the committee boat, Lon & Susie Woodrum’s Eureka, and the mark boat, Gerry Gunn’s White Hawk. The weather forecast was perfect, and all the signs were good for a great regatta. Sixteen Knarrs and seven Etchells had entered, and this year the regatta is one of the qualifying events for the International Knarr Championship (IKC), to be held in San Francisco in 2016.

During the three races, the competition was fierce in both fleets. The race committee set the course in Paradise Cove, and the wind was very cooperative requiring only one course correction between the first and second race. In the Etchells fleet it was a tight battle between Don Jesberg and Blaine Pedlow, with Don Jesberg in Viva claiming the trophy by one point. The battle for first in the Knarrs was a family affair, with Jon Perkins on USA 125 and Chris and Phil Perkins' Three Boys and a Girl ending up in a tie. The tie-breaker handed first place to USA 125.

After the racing, the crews returned to TYC for the prize-giving and social, which included Jeff Moseley’s famous barbecued oysters, which were much enjoyed by the competitors and the TYC volunteers alike. Hors d’oeuvres were also provided while the competitors enjoyed their adult beverages. It was really nice to hear the competitors thank the volunteers for all the hard work, and especially the efficient way in which the racing was run.
