A Fine Island Day

November 11, 2013

Estuary sailors enjoyed another Sunday just like the last one. Island YC followed up last weekend's Jack & Jill + 1 with the first Island Day of their midwinter season. The courses were similar – one lap up and down the Estuary followed by fraternizing and daily trophies back at the the nothing-fancy clubhouse in the Alameda Marina. The main difference was inevitable: a noticeable ebb took hold of racers last weekend, so this Sunday it was the flood's turn to help make quick work of the run. The wind was just about perfect in velocity and direction – unless you were hoping to try out your new #3.

A misfire of the gun at the first warning confused some starters. The race committee announced over the VHF that they would restart the sequence, but not everyone got the message, giving the advantage to those who were paying close attention. Five small divisions, including one designs for Merit 25s and Wilderness 21s, got going without further mishaps.
