Octogenarian Beer Can

July 17, 2011

Here's the octogenarian crew on Len Delmas's new Alerion 38 Another Girl in last week's Richmond Yacht Club Wednesday Night Race. A rough estimate based on age has everyone starting sailing in 1952 or earlier (and winning).

They are: Len Delmas  81 with 59 years of sailing (YOS); Jocelyn Nash, 81+ with 59 YOS. Jim Dewitt, 81 and 59+ YOS; Dennis Surteesm 81 and 56 YOS; and Cinde-Lou Delmas, 54 (the next Delmas generation). That's 341 total years of sailing (TYOS). Whats your crew's TYOS?

Another Girl got a great start and it took about an hour to cover the course to Southampton Shoal Light and back. They were the third boat to finish in a 30-boat fleet and tactically picked out a really good layline on a tricky flood day. Then again with all that experience onboard why wouldn’t they? The chatter was non-stop. So bad that Jocelyn, the sole voice of reason, finally requested quiet.

This outing is now the topic of a Hollywood (style) movie!
