Master Mariners Regatta

May 30, 2011

Forget your AC72s for a second and enjoy old school racing on the Bay with boats made of natural carbon fiber. The Master Mariners Regatta this year was sailed in cold, squally conditions on the Bay with what could be called a light northwesterly (light for this time of year). Most of these old boats like lots of wind, so the sentiment back at the club was tinged with a little bit of disappointment, and some remarked there was a Pacific Northwest feel to the day.

The racers finished in time for drinks and dinner at the Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda. Rain on the raft-up put a damper on the dockside boat show and sent everyone into the clubhouse for the awards and post race celebrations.

The 1930 John Alden design schooner Dauntless came up from her home port of San Diego in anticipation of 30-knot winds, and although those never materialized her crew and friends had fun. And it was still windier than most days in San Diego.
