SSS Corinthian Race Awards

April 16, 2011

The Singlehanded Sailing Society held their trophy meeting for the SSS Corinthian Race on Wednesday evening at Oakland YC. Etched glass plates were handed out to each division, and engraved perpetual trophies were entrusted to the overall Doublehanded and Singlehanded winners.

The Cal 20 Can O'Whoopass continued to live up to her name, scoring the overall DH win, despite crew Paul Sutchek's rather serious injuries sustained in the previous week's rockin' and rollin' Doublehanded Lightship Race.

A wind-hole parking lot at Southampton Shoals gave the slower boats a chance to catch up to the faster boats which had passed them earlier, making for an effective restart late in the race. "Thanks y'all for waiting for me at Southampton," quipped Stephen Buckingham, whose new-to-him Black Soo Starbuck finished second in Singlehanded Sportboats after overall the SH winner, Stan Martin's Moore 24 Sunshine.

The race committee passed along a thank you from the pilot of an outbound tanker, one of two whose departure took them through the deepwater channel just as the 105-boat SSS fleet were crossing it to get to the Cityfront. "Some of you lost time waiting for those ships to pass." A murmur of agreement rumbled through the room.

Island Yacht Club's Race Chair John New was also on hand to pass out the hats for the Doublehanded Lightship racers, and the awards part of the evening was followed by speaker Bruce Schwab, in town for Strictly Sail Pacific. He was giving a seminar there on 'Lithium Energy Storage', and used the friendly SSS meeting as a dress rehearsal.
