Big Daddy Saturday

March 12, 2011

Richmond YC's Big Daddy Regatta got underway today, with 42 boats sailing on the Olympic Circle course and 44 on the Deep Water course. Ninety-three had signed up for Saturday's buoy racing, and 100 are registered for Sunday's pursuit race. Unlike the Great Pumpkin Regatta in October (the two are frequently confused), the Big Daddy has only two courses. Big Daddy has historically been limited to boats with a PHRF rating of 174 or less, and so gets fewer boats than Great Pumpkin, which adds in the Southampton Shoals course.

A nice 10-15 knot westerly got the boats around their three buoy races so quickly that they started arriving back at the docks by 1500 hours, an hour earlier than planned.

Tonight's band, Fast Times, played at last summer's Richmond Riviera Regatta. The events committee liked the band so much, they hired them for Big Daddy, so the theme this year had to be 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'.
